Thursday, May 31st, 2007

www.chron.com

Today the Houston Chronicle posted news about a two-day music festival in in Bryan-College Station, at the Texas World Speedway on October 13 and 14th, which will feature Willie Nelson, Los Lonely Boys, Lyle Lovett, Flatlanders, Robert Earl Keen, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Trace Atkins, Los Lonely Boys, Drive by Truckers, Leon Russell, Dirks Bentley and over 40 other mostly country and Americana acts.

The festival is being put together by C3 Presents, which also organizes the Austin City Limits Festival and Lollapalooza.  Two-day passes will go on sale at 7 a.m. Saturday. Prices and other information are available at www.bigstatefestival.com.

I guess this will send the message — Don’t mess with Texas, California! Coachella or not, Texas is the Country Music Capital of the world!

No Willie Nelson Show at Red Rocks this Year? Please, say it isn’t so

(Willie Nelson at Red Rocks, 2006)

My annual query to Red Rocks illicited this sad response:

Linda
At this point, Willie does not have any dates on hold, so I doubt if he will be back this year.  He still holds the record for number of shows though!

Willie Nelson in Half Baked

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

One of the most redeeming features of the movie is the endless parade of cameos. Many of the guest stars portray classic figures in the pantheon of potheads: Jon Stewart is the enhancement smoker, convinced that every activity is better while high; Snoop Dogg is the scavenger, the chronic mooch; Willie Nelson plays the “back in the day” smoker who spends his time recalling how in his day a dime bag actually cost a dime; Steven Baldwin is the MacGuyver smoker able to make smoking implements out of ordinary items; Janeane Garofalo is the artist who’s only creative when she smokes.

Merle Haggard, in Luck, Texas, 2000, singing Motorcycle Cowboy Song

www.timmikeska.com

What do you get when you combine allot of beer, 30 big Harley Motorcycles, 50 leather clad bikers (with their ladies), 125 guests dancing to country music and Rudy Mikeska’s Bar-B-Q ??

You get a Merle Haggard Party at Willie Nelson’s “Luck Texas Ranch” near the Perdenales River northwest of Austin.
I received a call about 3 weeks ago from my friend Billy Minick, the proprietor of the famous “Billy Bob’s” nightclub in Forth Worth. He told me that Merle would be in Austin in January to have a wedding & music video shot at Willie Nelson’s Ranch.

Later, Rick Smith the record producer called to finalize the plans. So, I told both Billy and Rick that I could handle this party and that I would spread out a fancy buffet for this occasion. They just wanted the basic’s …… Beef Brisket, Mikeska’s Homemade Sausage, Boneless Smoked Pork Loin, and Smoked Chicken Halves. Along with this we had our Bar-B-Q Sauce, Hot Buttered Potatoes, Cole Slaw, Spicy Red Beans, Pickles, Onions, Peppers, Homemade Bread and of course….. Banana Pudding!

On Willie Nelson’s Appearance in LA Criminal Court

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Unfair actions by two beloved towns
http://www.normantranscript.com/opinion/local_story_150012351

The Norman Transcript
Two towns I know well have been messing with friends I love, and I don’t like that a bit.

A prosecutor in beautiful little St. Martinville, La., recently made Willie Nelson appear in criminal court. Willie was handed his first-ever conviction for marijuana possession in the same parish where I spend most of my winters and pay property taxes. I am hurt.

“I think the way this was handled, St. Martin Parish ought to be proud,” prosecutor Chester Cedars told the local newspaper. “We did not give him a free pass. A free pass would have been just to let him pay a fine without having to come to court. I made him come in just like everybody else.”

Excuse me? Willie Nelson is not just like everybody else. Willie Nelson is Willie Nelson, for heaven’s sake, great and rare American, a hero to millions, the only addition we need ever make to Mount Rushmore. (more…)
