Folk Uke, Hard Pans, Mike Nicolai and the Sensations to perform at Hole in the Wall Austin, (March 7, 2013)

On March 7, 2013, Folk Uke will perform at  Hole in the Wall, in Austin, Texas.    Amy Nelson and Cathy Guthrie will open at 10:00 p.m.

“It’s a busy week around here… Friday I’m filling in on bass with Ramsay Midwood somewhere called Hunter, TX. Then on Sunday the Sensations and I are doing our first recording session. It’s always weird and cool to hear what stuff sounds like with a little distance. Next Thursday night 3/7, we’re on a great bill at Hole in the Wall. Very excited about this gig. First on the bill, at 10pm, is Folk Uke (Cathy Guthrie & Amy Nelson).

I first saw them play in late 2005, when I strummed and sang a bit with Ramsay Midwood on a tour that Arlo Guthrie put together to benefit musicians in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Everybody was sweet and fun and the shows were great. Cathy and Amy’s respective dads, Arlo Guthrie and Willie Nelson, sat in with them in New Orleans. There were fun aftershow hotel picking parties. Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Cyril Neville, Kevn Kinney, and a bunch of other badasses played.

I hadn’t seen Kevni Kinney since my old band the Draghounds opened for the mighty Drivin’ and Cryin’ in Minneapolis in the early 90s. I met a lot of wild and warm people on that tour.  The guys in the bands, the crew, everybody was tops. All for a good cause to boot. The whole thing was a blast, and it remains one of the highlights of my lifelong music goofing. Since then I’ve wanted to do a show with Folk Uke sometime, and now it’s finally happenin’! Get there early to see these ladies, you’ll be glad that you did, I promise.”

Willie Nelson & Family at Indiana University (April 6, 2013)

IU

by Jeff LaFave

We were always on his mind.

Music legend Willie Nelson will play April 6 at the IU Auditorium.

Nelson, a 79-year-old country music icon, has been renowned for an extensive solo career and membership of the “Highwaymen” supergroup featuring Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings.

“I can’t wait,” IU Auditorium Associate Director Maria Talbert said. “We at the Auditorium are very excited to be hosting Willie Nelson again. He was here in 2004 and put on an amazing show for the community. We are looking forward to another great night.”

The performance, billed as Willie Nelson and Family, will feature cuts from his upcoming album “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” planned for release April 16.
Nelson’s six-decade career spans 200 albums, including hit singles “On the Road Again” and the breakthrough hit “Crazy,” which he performed with Patsy Cline.

Fittingly enough, Nelson’s performance at the auditorium will happen near the campus statue of Hoagy Carmichael — Nelson recorded a cover of Carmichael’s famed song
“Stardust.”

With expectations of a large ticket demand, the auditorium will start ticket sales with a lottery system 9 a.m. Friday.

“People can show up to the Auditorium in person starting at nine,” Talbert said. “They don’t need to come any earlier. We do the lottery system to keep people from lining up
overnight.”

Tickets for the one-night performance go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through the auditorium website, box office and all Ticketmaster locations.

Ticket costs range from $39 to $75.

It also stars Lindsey Houn, Tess Harper, Burt Reynolds, and a cameo appearance by our very own Willie Nelson, who also joins Toby for a song on the sound track.
