Willie Nelson turns 84 Saturday and is, intentionally or not, marking that occasion with the release of “God’s Problem Child,” his best album in years.

Mixing seven of his own compositions/co-writes with five perfectly selected songs from other writers, Nelson’s created a late-life record that stands out from other such collections because, well, it’s songs from Willie.

That means there’s humor, road-rooted wisdom, a little faith and a lot of acceptance set in some graceful, smooth classic Nelson-style arrangements punctuated by his distinctive nylon-string guitar work with Mickey Raphael’s harmonica evocatively sliding in and out of the songs.

Nelson’s singing is up there with the best he’s put on record, his distinctive phrasing and soft but distinct vocalizing putting a touching heart into songs like the romantic “Butterfly.” He adds a worn understanding to “Lady Luck” and “I Made a Mistake” and a sly resignation to “Your Memory Has a Mind of Its Own.”

Humor comes on the wry, swinging “Still Not Dead,” one of the co-writes with producer Buddy Cannon, that takes off on internet rumors of his death, saying “Don’t bury me, I’ve got a show to play/and I woke up still not dead today.”

Then there’s the title cut that features the late Leon Russell and vocals from its co-writers Tony Joe White and Jamey Johnson that embraces Nelson’s status as an outlaw country icon while “Old Timer” finds him still on the road.

“God’s Problem Child,” which opens with “Little House on the Hill,” an allegory for going to heaven, ends with “He Won’t Ever Be Gone,” a Gary Nicholson-penned tribute to Willie’s old running buddy Merle Haggard.

The superb album and the continual touring that will bring him to Pinewood Bowl in June show that Willie won’t ever be gone either. Grade: A

A birthday toast to Willie Nelson, with the Red Headed Stranger IPA

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

“We figured since hops are a cousin to cannabis that the Red Headed Stranger himself would appreciate a hoppy red IPA,” co-founder Mark McDavid said. “Plus, we love Willie’s music, and we love to honor Texas musicians with our beers.”

Red Headed Stranger has “a strong malt backbone with an assertive bitterness of sticky sweet American hops (Nugget, Zeus, Chinook and Cascade),” according to the brewery. It’s one of the four year-round beers that Ranger Creek makes, including the recently award-winning San Antonio Lager.

You can find a six-pack of Red Headed Stranger at various locations of Spec’s, Total Wine & More, HEB and Central Market. Whip In might also carry some — as well as the new 365 by Whole Foods Market in Cedar Park that opened earlier this week.

Red Headed Stranger is a hoppy tribute to Willie Nelson, who is turning 84 on April 29.
Better yet, the Yeti Flagship on South Congress Avenue is throwing a birthday party for the beloved Texas singer (and delighting our pun-loving hearts by calling it Have a Willie Nice Birthday). The party will feature the Texas Gentlemen on stage singing nothing but Willie tunes. There also will be custom Yeti Flagship bandanas and — you guessed it — Red Headed Stranger pouring at the Barrr.

Have a Willie Nice Birthday runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 220 S. Congress Ave. For more information, visit

Willie Nelson at Stagecoach Festival

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

“Country’s most significant outlaw musician turned 84 Saturday and was making his first festival appearance since releasing his latest album, ‘God’s Problem Child.’ He waited in his bus, parked right up to the back of the Palomino stage, until about 30 minutes after his show was supposed to start. Then he and his guests, including his son, singer-guitarist Lukas Nelson, disembarked and were greeted by a crowd of friends, who had gifts and a chocolate, guitar-shaped cake waiting for him. Willie blew out a candle on the cake and walked on stage in front of a full house clamoring to celebrate his birthday.”

Willie Nelson on new Steve Earl album, “So You Wannabe an Outlaw” (Out June 16th)

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

Steve Earle’s new album, So You Wannabe an Outlaw, will be released June 16 and features guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert,  and another Texas music mainstay, Johnny Bush.

Although Earle was raised near San Antonio, the project marks his first recording sessions in Austin and his first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997’s El Corazón. After establishing his career in Nashville with the 1986 Grammy-winning album Guitar Town, he has resided in New York City for the past decade.

“There’s nothing ‘retro’ about this record,” Earle said. “I’m just acknowledging where I’m coming from. … Look, I’m always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do. And I’m always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It’s who I am.”

Dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings, So You Wannabe an Outlaw pays tribute to the Outlaw music movement led by Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser and others.

“I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson’s ‘Red Headed Stranger’ came out,” Earle says, who makes an appearance as a young man in Guy Clark’s kitchen in the Outlaw country documentary, Heartworn Highways. “I was around when Waylon was recording ‘Dreaming My Dreams.’ ‘Guitar Town’ wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs.”

Earle is joined on the album by his backing band The Dukes, and he recorded the project in Austin. Along with the 12 tracks of So You Wanna Be An Outlaw, a deluxe edition will include four additional iconic songs from the Outlaw era: “Ain’t No God in Mexico” by Billy Joe Shaver, “Sister’s Coming Home”/”Down at the Corner Beer Joint” and “The Local Memory” by Willie Nelson, and “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” by Waylon Jennings.

steve-earle-the-dukes-so-you-wanna-be-an-outlaw“I was out to unapologetically ‘channel’ Waylon as best as I could,” Earle says about the album. “This record was all about me playing on the back pick-up of a ’66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life.”

No, that’s not a pickup truck Earle is referring too, it’s the hot twang first evidenced in Bakersfield country, and adopted by the Outlaws in the 70’s when they reigned supreme. So You Wanna Be An Outlaw will be released June 16th via Warner Bros. Records, and Steve will launch a summer tour in support of the album.
