Willie Nelson to be honored at ACM Awards in Nashville

Wednesday, May 31st, 2017
by:  Teddy McDonald

Willie Nelson, Eric Church and Toby Keith are among those being honored at this year’s ACM Honors event in Nashville. The ceremony recognizes special honorees and off-camera category winners from the ACM Awards.Eric Church will be receive the Merle Haggard Spirit Award, which goes each year to a songwriter for “following their own path, crafting great songs and epitomizing Merle’s spirit through genuine performances and great storytelling,” the organization explains. The award certainly seems to fit. Eric has spent 12 years establishing himself in country music with five studio albums and songs including “Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Springsteen,” “Give Me Back My Hometown” and “Record Year,” to name a few. He also bucked convention with the 2015 release of his album Mr. Misunderstood, which was released directly to fan club members without any promotion before going on sale to the general public. Past recipients of the honor include Miranda Lambert.

Willie Nelson and Toby Keith, meanwhile, are being honored with the Poet’s Award recognizing “outstanding and longstanding musical and/or lyrical contributions throughout their career[s].” Joining the pair with the same honor is late songwriter and children’s author Shel Silverstein. Nelson’s library of celebrated compositions include “Crazy”, “Hello Walls” “Funny How Time Slips Away” and a long list of others. Some of Keith’s notable titles include “American Soldier,” “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” and “I Love This Bar,” while Silverstein’s country music contributions include “A Boy Named Sue,” Marie Laveau” and “Cover of Rolling Stone.”

Other award recipients are George Strait (Cliffie Stone Icon Award), Dolly Parton (Gary Haber Lifting Lives Award), Kelsea Ballerini (Gene Weed Milestone Award), the television series Nashville (Tex Ritter Film Award), songwriter Lori McKenna (Songwriter of the Year Award), and Bob Kingsley and Reba McEntire (both receiving the Mae Boren Axton Service Award). See a complete list of honorees here.

The 11th Annual ACM Honors will take place at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium August 23 and be taped to on CBS later in the year.

Micah Nelson comes from a lineage of musical and cultural pioneers, growing up touring with his father Willie Nelson and his brother Lukas Nelson, he has always been surrounded with vibrant and authentic creative spirits. Both a talented visionary artist and iconoclastic musician, he has performed live with many different acts at events like FarmAid, Neil Young’s Bridge-School Benefit, Desert Trip festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Coachella, Bonnaroo Festival as well as shows like Conan O’brien, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and more .

He has showcased his artwork and music in countless other venues, spanning the creative spectrum. From his involvement in the psych-punk-orchestra Insects vs. Robots, his ongoing musical collaborations and extensive touring with Neil Young, his live performance-painting and multi-instrumental contributions to the band Promise of the Real with his brother Lukas, to his cymatic visualizations of dancing water molecules, idiosyncratic charango performance, and singing/songwriting/guitar playing with his future-folk project PÃ¥rticle Kid, Micah is constantly exploring the symbiosis of light/sound/vibration, striving to discover new emotions through various forms of expression, and seeking to touch the outer reaches of the synesthetic experience.

LivWell Cannabis Dispensary in Denver #WilliesReserve #LivWellCannabis

Monday, May 29th, 2017

I drove into the big city, or at least to the edge of Denver, and visited LivWell Cannabis Dispensary, who were featuring a Memorial Day Willie’s Reserve special. Folks from Willies Reserve there, giving away buttons, lighters, stickers, lanyards and other fun stuff. Willie’s Reserve had their displays in two Denver dispensaries to day, and their LivWell in Greeley.

Also, they have a guitar signed by Willie Nelson, and if you take a picture of yourself with the guitar and post it on Instagram, and here it is.

And hey, I ran into Sam again, at LivWell. Sam was at the official Willies Reserve Launch last year, when he worked in Denver for the Lucy in the Sky Dispensary (I think that’s the name.) Now, he is working with the great folks at Willie’s Reserve. What a nice group of people work for Willie’s Reserve! Everyone I have met, has been so nice, and informed and helpful.

Another Willie Nelson cover, “On the Road Again” (Tony Lucca, Jay Nash and Matt Duke)

Sunday, May 28th, 2017

Tony Lucca partners with his friends — and frequent musical partners — Jay Nash and Matt Duke for May’s installment of The Boot’s Guest Room Sessions. Together, the three covered Willie Nelson’s beloved country classic “On the Road Again;” readers can watch above.

Lucca, Nash and Duke are all solo artists, but they also record and perform together as TFDI. For their Guest Room Sessions video, they perched themselves on the couch in Nash’s living room; their version of “On the Road Again” feels fairly autobiographical, given that the trio has spent years on the road together.

“”On the Road Again” is a song that the three of us have been fond of covering for some time now,” Lucca tells The Boot. “This was shot during a rehearsal for our current tour, in Jay’s living room, just before we literally got on the road (again) to head to Boston to kick off the tour.”

Together, Lucca, Nash and Duke released their self-titled debut EP as TFDI in 2009; they released both the TFDI II EP and their When I Stop Running album in 2011. Their most recent album, Beggars and Ballers, came out in April, and, as their Guest Room Sessions song choice indicates, they’ve spent plenty of time touring across the country. Fans can visit for upcoming show details.
