Budrock Prewitt moves to Amsterdam to fish for bikes

Budrock “The Illuminator” Prewitt, lighting director for Willie Nelson & family for over 40 years, turned 65 this month, and made some major life plans.   Buddy asked and received a one-year sabattical, and announced plans to move to Amsterdam to retrieve bikes from it’s canals.  Buddy learned about the profession during one of the Willie Nelson & Family European tours when they played Amsterdam.  He was in a bar, and met two men who work for the City of Amsterdam to fish out bikes from the river.

The Dutch capital is widely known for its elegant canals and the approximately 2 million bicycles pedaled by its residents.  For some reason, which Buddy couldn’t explain, a lot of them end up in the canals, providing jobs for people to get them out.   Combined, they result in the necessity for a very special kind of job: the bike fisherman.

Buddy said the workers use hydraulic claws to pull about 15,000 bikes out of the water per year. They’ve been doing it since the 1960s, and there is no threat that they’ll be out of a job anytime soon.

I spoke with Buddy about his career change.

LB:  Wow, Buddy, that’s a big change!  A  bike fisherman!

BP:  Yeah, ever since I heard about it, that they pay guys to fish bikes out of canals, I just knew I had to do it.  I like Amsterdam, I like fishing, I like bikes.  It’s a dream job.  I think I get paid by the bike, and I think I will be good at it.”

Best wishes, Buddy.
