Willie Nelson’s Tipi, Colorado (1979)

Sunday, August 21st, 2016

“In September of 1979, Mr. & Mrs. Willie Nelson commissioned me to paint a tipi at their home in Colorado.  Since my introduction to Willie in 1973, I have had the opportunity to create numerous artistic designs and projects for him, yet this experience was my most unique. For the next two weeks, I was able to participate in a very personal and private atmosphere that Willie and his family have here. With this inspiration, I have tried to capture the spirit that is in “Willie Blue Skies. ”

In the foothills of Mt. Evans, at about 8,000 ft., the tipi sits hidden between two parallel rock stratus. The tipi stands 27 feet tall, with a 60 foot diamater. Connected in this order: Wolf, Elk, Eagle, Moose, Steer. There are five animal totems painted with latex on the outside.”

“I was in Evergreen  on Labor Day weekend (32 years ago this week) painting the tipi for Willie & family.  Thought you might like to see these drawings I made while I was there. For the couple of days that he was there, Willie would jog around the barn and ocassionaly come over and help me dap some paint on the tipi.”

“It was truly a thrill to visit with Willie Nelson when he was in Denver. I’d met him in passing many years before, when he came to do an eTown radio show. This time around, there on the bus with Nick and our crew to tape an interview with Willie, I was struck by what a sweet and gentle presence he has, really kind and welcoming. Incredible man. His lovely wife Annie was also there, as well as Elaine who was so helpful to us. Kacey Musgraves and her band put everyone in a good mood on Saturday, before Willie Nelson & Family took the stage.  We have Janis Tillerson, from Texas, for these great photos (before security made her put away her camera.)

She had a familiar signature on her guitar!

Willie Nelson Unveils Cannabis Company, “Willie’s Reserve” in Colorado

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016
by: Kate McKee Simmons

The who’s who of Colorado’s marijuana industry gathered Saturday night for the unveiling of Willie’s Reserve, Willie Nelson’s cannabis company.

To launch his new product, Nelson hosted two kick-off concerts, one last week in Washington state and another on Saturday, July 30, at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village.

“This event’s been a collection of the people that support the ideals of Willie Nelson. It’s a collection of people that understand that music and cannabis and culture and society all blend together really well,” says pioneering ganjapreneur Kayvan Khalatbari, who’s been working with Willie’s Reserve. (See him in the video above.)

It’s always a treat to see Willie Nelson & Family.  Not only is Willie a living legend, but he’s just a class act and always puts on a great show.  The crowd was naturally an older one, but there was a healthy peppering of younger fans throughout.  It was definitely a family affair, onstage and off.  Before Willie came out we were treated to a video tribute for Willie’s friend and collaborator whom we lost this year, Merle Haggard, as an amazing sunset began to fire up over Fiddler’s Green.

Willie got right into it with his tried and true opener “Whiskey River,” and although there seemed to be some sound issues they were quickly squared away.  We got the Willie/Waylon classic “Mammas Don’t Let Your Baby’s Grow Up to Be Cowboys” and the Nelson/Haggard collaboration from the 2015 album Django and Jimmie “It’s All Going to Pot,” which was dedicated to Merle and naturally saw a few folks toking up.

As the sun went down we got the classic Willie number made popular by Patsy Cline “Crazy,” and as the amphitheater darkened, a fitting “Night Life” followed by a great version of “Georgia On My Mind.”  Willie and his beloved guitar “Trigger” both sounded great.  It was then time to pay tribute to another country great, Hank Williams, with “Jambalaya.”  At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house during “Always on my Mind.”

Other highlights included a rollicking “Good Hearted Woman,” another Hank song in “Hey Good Lookin,” and with the cloak of night over Fiddler’s “Green” the crowd was less bashful during “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die.”  It was also awesome to see opener Kacey Musgraves come out on the gospel number “I Saw the Light.”  All in all it was a solid show, and at 83 we’re happy to report that Willie is still going strong.

Willie Nelson & Family will be performing at The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles on October 18. Click here for tickets.
