Thanks so much to pinkestblack for letting me share photos she took on New Year’s Eve, of Willie Nelson performing at Charley’s, in Pa’ai, Maui.

Alanis is reportedly recording a cover of ‘To all the Girls (Boys) I’ve Loved Before’ sung and made famous by Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias.  It will be on a single, and Willie will play guitar on the song.

Thank you again, PinkestBlack.  Those of us living here on the frozen tundra are grateful for a glimpse into paradise.

Willie’s first concert of 2010 — New Year’s Eve in Hawaii

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Hi Linda,

You are so wise to be inspired by Willie.  I just found him this last year, and have been lucky to have seen him in concert 4 times already, most recently in Knoxville, Nashville and Maui this New Year’s Eve.

I gave Willie a puka shell necklace in Nashville to remind him to come back to Maui, and apparently it worked!

Concert tidbits: Alanis Morrissette sang a duet with Willie, “To all the Girls/Boys I’ve loved before.”

Willie counted down to the New Year from 60 seconds, but got the crowd confused when he said several numbers twice and skipped a few.

Lukas continued to perform after his father left and came back for an encore (“Hana Hou” or “One more time” in Hawaiian.)

At one point, Lukas (Micah played drums) and Willie seemed to be dueling it out against each other with fantastic guitar playing.  Neither one gave up anything to the other.

Much aloha, and thanks for keeping me continually inspired by the man also.

Thanks to Maui musician Tom Conway for sending me a link to Gail Swanson’s music.  I listened to one of the songs on the album that Willie Nelson sang with her on: ‘The One That Got Away.”  It’s a beautiful heart-breaker; the kind of song you love to hear Willie sing as a duet.

You can listen to samples of Gail’s music and purchase the album from her website at:

Gail wrote:

“Thank you so much for helping me spread the word about my new CD and this duet! I wrote the song with Cris Sommer Simmons and we are so happy Willie liked it enough to sing on it – he’s the best!”

Peace and aloha, Gail

Willie’s Place, on Sirius/XM Radio, re-broadcast Willie Nelson’s concert at Charlie’s, in Pa’ai, on Maui, Hawaii today.  The concert was part of MySpace’s secret concert series, and was held in celebration of Willie’s latest album, American Classic.  Willie was joined by guitarist Tom Conway, and other very talented local artists.

Today’s rebroadcast of this concert just ended; if you missed it, Sirius/XM will rebroadcast the show again on Saturday, November 28th, at 1:00 pm ET and at 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday November 29th, at  9:00 pm ET.

It is a great concert.  Willie sings from his American Classic album, and some of his classic songs.  The musicians he plays with are so good, and are so in synch with Willie on his material. I wish they would release this on cd.

fyi, you can pick up Willie’s Place  on Direct TV, too; that’s where I listened today.

Tom Conway and Willie Nelson

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Tom,

Thanks for sending me the news article about the show at Charley’s with Willie.  And thanks to Sandra for the pictures!

Hey, Willie talked about you on Willie’s Place, with Bill Mack [sirius/xm radio].  He talked about the concert and recording with you.  And he called you Tommy!

I’ll bet you worked really hard getting ready for that show.

Linda

Linda,

Wow, I had no idea he mentioned me on Bill Mack! Actually, I worked my butt off on Willie’s new album…I spent a lot of hours transcribing every single tune on the album and wrote out charts for all the band members.  My personal goal was to memorize the entire record and I’m proud to say I hit the stage that night without a safety net!

An opportunity like this may only happen once in a lifetime and I really wanted to honor Joe Sample’s great arrangements and give it my all…  especially for Willie!  I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity / assignment Willie gave me and I cherish the memory of a wonderful night just fifteen minutes from my home on Maui.

Yeah, a lot my close friends call me Tommy. :  )

Thanks, Linda!

Willie Nelson’s ‘American Classic’ cd party in Hawaii

““It was unbelievable, definitely the best gig of my life.”
– Tom Conway.

by Jon Woodhouse

Last week Willie Nelson hosted a release party for his new CD, “American Classic” at Charley’s. This jam-packed “secret” gig featured the country legend playing songs from the new album, along with performances by indie rock group Band of Horses, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real and Gail Swanson.

Willie’s ace backing band featured Gypsy Pacific’s Tom Conway on guitar, bassist Marcus Johnson, guitarist Phil Benoit, keyboardist Brian Cuomo, saxophonist David Choy, and Michael Buono on drums.

“Willie called me a couple of months ago and gave me an advance copy of the record and wanted me to put a band together,” explains Tom Conway. “I basically transcribed the entire album and we rehearsed and it turned out real well.”

Tom joined Gail Swanson to open the evening, followed by Promise of the Real rocking out with guest vocalist Woody Harrison on Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Willie joined Band of Horses for their finale of “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys,” and stayed on stage to perform most of “American Classic” with the Maui all-stars.

Released on the Blue Note jazz label, the CD sees Willie return to the great American songbook with classic tunes like “Since I Fell For You” and “Fly Me to The Moon.”

“He purposely wanted the show to coincide with the official release of the album,” says Tom. “It was unbelievable, definitely the best gig of my life.” The show was videotaped by MySpace and Sirius XM Radio will broadcast it some time soon. Tom and Gypsy Pacific previously collaborated with the country legend, recording 18 tracks for a forthcoming album.
