“Willie Nelson was on fire”

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

That’s a direct quote from George,  who is one of those fans who goes back to the hotel after a Willie Nelson & Family concert, and sends me pictures.  Whattaguy.  Thanks, George!  He sent these from the Las Vegas Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas in 2007.

“Hi, Linda.

An up-to-the-minute report from the Road…just got back to our hotel room from the show.

At the last minute my wife and I decided to head to Las Vegas for tonight’s show at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel.  I’ve attached a few photos for the blog.  Enjoy!

PS.  It was a great show.  Willie was on fire!”

Willie Nelson receives award from Brenda Lee.

“I want to thank all of my friends, and all the people in this town, that made it possible for me to be standing here.  Hearing all these nice things said about me – I almost gave myself a standing ovation.   I held back, though.” — Willie Nelson

The music community came together in Downtown Nashville on August 29 to celebrate pioneers Fred Foster, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson with the seventh annual Leadership Music Dale Franklin Award. Vince Gill hosted the ceremony for a packed room of music industry executives, creators, friends and family. The Leadership Music Dale Franklin Award was created “to recognize music trailblazers who exemplify the highest quality of leadership and leading by example.”

Can’t believe it, but I started this blog four year ago today.  And I just want to thank Willie Nelson for all the enjoyment his music has brought me and continues to bring me.  And thanks to Willie Nelson fans and family and friends, photographers and authors and producers and djs for sending me pictures and stories and links about Willie Nelson and Family, for me to share with other fans from all over the world who check into this blog for news about Willie.  Like Carol, from NY, who took this great photo of Willie, connecting with a fan at a concert, giving someone a memory they will treasure forever.

Just checked, and this is my 9,464th post about Willie at my blog.  When I started this someone asked if I thought there was enough information about Willie Nelson to blog every day.  Well, I can’t keep up or catch up.  I have so many magazines and clippings and pictures that people have given me, or that I’ve purchased off e-bay, or found somewhere, and Willie is always in the news.  Then, there’s his talented family who are always busy creating, too.  Yep,  I could blog full time and not get it all up here.  So much Willie; so little time.

Thank you, Willie Nelson, for all the enjoyment you continue to give me and to all your fans who love you so much.

Willie Nelson, in Paris, France (6/26/2010)

Thanks so much to Katrina and Lane for sending pictures from Willie Nelson and Family’s show in Paris this summer.

Lane knows how I love to see Willie’s name up in lights.  Thanks, Lane!

Willie and Bobby Nelson

Bobbie Nelson and her brother Willie have made music for the better part of 70 years. Bobbie and her piano are nothing short of the heart, soul and backbone of the Family Band. “I’m just joined to the piano. I put all my feelings, happy or sad, into that piano. It reflects the way I feel,” Bobbie said.

Bobbie and Willie played together as kids in the church house band. When Willie went off to pursue songwriting and performing, Bobbie raised three children and played piano in lounges and restaurants.

In 1973, she got the call to join Willie in the studio, and she’s been at his side ever since, leaving little time to record a Bobbie Nelson record, not that she minded in the least.

“It satisfied me. We’d done all this gospel: ‘The Troublemaker’, ‘Shotgun Willie’, ‘The Redheaded Stranger’. I was fulfilled and grateful that I could play with Willie again,” she said.

Bobbie Nelson released her album, Audiobiography, a collection of solo piano performances, plus two new tunes with her brother. It puts the sideman center stage, not that’s ever been the idea.

“I’m so satisfied. I’m complete. My brother is in the spotlight. I want him to be there. And I want to do all I can to keep him there. It’s my desire to be there, not in the front, but with him,” Bobbie said.

It’s easy to assume life on the road in a boy’s club can’t be easy, but Bobbie’s not complaining. Like her brother, she believes the road keeps her young.

If I didn’t want to do it so much, I couldn’t physically or mentally do it. It’s like wearing contacts. If you don’t want to, you can’t put those things in your eyes. I feel compelled. I think this is what I’m supposed to do. Willie and I are supposed to be playing music,” she said.

Willie Nelson at Neil Abercrombie for Governor rally in Honolulu (8/24/2010)

Tom Conway and Willie Nelson

Thanks to Tom and Sandra Conway for sharing pictures from the Neil Abercrombie fundraiser and concert on Wedneday, August 24, 2010. Tom was invited to play with Willie Nelson at the concert, and sent these photos and stories:

“Well the event was a smash success! Of course the highlight for me was getting to play with Willie again. I worked really hard immersing myself in his standard repertoire the last couple of weeks…everyday practicing and memorizing as many of his tunes that I could in order to be prepared. I’m glad I did – I think the band sounded really good and I certainly want to give him my best.  I know so many of his tunes now that I hope I can play with him again at some point!

Everyone at the event was so friendly and the atmosphere was highly charged in a great way. We got to spend some quality time with Willie and he was in great form as usual. He flew back home after the gig but we stayed overnight and went out to celebrate with Neil supporters Bob & Kelly King who own Pacific Biodiesel on Maui. It was just a fantastic time that Sandra & I will never forget…the full moon over Diamond Head late that night didn’t hurt the ambience either as Sandy & I sat out on the balcony.”

And as if living in Hawaii isn’t cool enough, lucky Shelly Brown was one of the lucky who attended the Neil Abercrombie for Governor fundraiser, and got to see  Willie Nelson & friends in concert.  Tom Conway and his band played, as well as Willie K.  Willie and Abercrombie are old friends.   Shelly sent along more great photos from Charles Bateman, who was also at the show.

Shelly wrote:

“The concert was opened up by Willie K who wowed the crowd with an incredible artistic rendition of “We Are The World”.  Willie K impressions of all the singers included the Dion Warwick and Willie Nelson duet portion of the song and the crowd went crazy over this song.

“Then Willie Nelson and Tom Conway’s band took the stage and the crowd went ballistic.

The playlist went pretty much like this:

Whiskey River
Good Hearted-Woman
Crazy/HelloWalls/Nightlife medley
Always on My Mind
Nobody’s Fault but Mine
I’ll Fly Away
Circle Will Be Unbroken
(Willie then asked the crowd if they wanted to hear Hank Williams; we all said hell yeah)
Move it On Over
Jambalaya
Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain
On the Road Again
I Saw the Light

Before the crowd could even ask for a “Hana Hou” (“Do it Again” in Hawaiian), Willie asked us, “Do Y’all Mind if we play one more?”  This left the crowd totally disarmed.  Willie mirrored a local, very humble style that the crowd loved.

Willie’s lovely wife, Annie, was close at hand throughout the concert and actually acted as a stage hand at times, grabbing Willie’s electric Fender guitar and Tom Conway’s guitar and leads and other items.  She was the epitome of aloha.

The crowd left feeling bonded together with Willie and Neil Abercrombie’s vision of what Hawaii and America can be.

After the concert me and my new friends from very different corners of America were treated to a rare vision of a Waikiki lunar moon rainbow.  We all toasted Willie for this special Hawaii treat.”

Mahalo, and much aloha,
Shelly R, Brown, and Charles Bateman Jr
