abe

I wasn’t going to deign to acknowledge the most recent mean-spirited rumor about Willie that was spread on the internet, but then Chris Nelson, a friend and Willie Nelson fan from Michigan, sent me this poem he wrote. Thanks, Chris, about says it all.

Thank you, Lord (for makin’ it just a hoax)

I’d be lyin’

If I said

I wasn’t cryin’.

And when I heard the news

My entire soul felt the blues

And I could feel

The blues they were playin’

And what the blues were sayin’.

And even after I read it was all a hoax

I thought, ‘Them mother fuckers

And their fucked up jokes’.

I filled one up

And had a beer

And a couple of (big, long) tokes

And a couple of (big, long) tokes.

Thank you, Lord,

for makin’ it just a hoax.

Charley’s bar in Paia, Maui, not for sale

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Thanks to Tom Conway (www.TomConwayGuitar.com)  who sent me this picture of a giant Trigger which sits at Charley’s, in Maui.   Tom said it is almost 12 feet tall.

Rumors have been flying that Charley’s bar in Paia, Maui, commonly referred to as “Willie Nelson’s bar,” has been sold.

But General Manager Nancy Garcia says the rumors are false.

“There’s been interest in people buying it, but it’s not up for sale,” she said.

The bar, where Willie Nelson has played for years and is bedecked with his memorabilia, has been a mainstay on Maui’s North Shore, where owner Jim Fuller has operated it for four decades.

A cause of the rumors could be the back parking lot that, according to Garcia, is being renovated by a group of Greek billionaires.

“We’re basically a construction site,” Garcia said.

She said lack of access to the lot, which comprises a major portion of downtown parking, is hurting business for Charley’s and the surrounding restaurants and shops.

Willie, Bob and John? Well, take me out to the ballpark, then

It looks like Bob Dylan may be hitting the road with John Mellencamp for a run of minor league ballpark gigs this summer. Nothing has been confirmed, but at a recent Joan Baez concert in Bloomingon she let the word slip. After playing “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right”  at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater to a crowd that included hometown hero John Mellencamp, Baez said “Mellencamp? Are you really going to go on tour with that guy? Seriously, come talk to me after the show.”

If that wasn’t enough of a clue, yesterday Mellencamp posted this on his website: “A special tour is in the works, slated to start in early July and run through the end of August. It will play at minor league baseball fields, with John sharing top billing with two other major artists.” According to the usually-reliable Dylan fansite Bob Links, the third artist in the bill will probably be Willie Nelson.

Take Me out to the Willie Nelson/Bob Dylan Ball Park Tour, Summer 2009

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Unconfirmed, but www.boblink.com, a Bob Dylan website, posts that Bob Dylan may do a Summer 2009 tour of west coast ballparks with Willie Nelson, concentrating on venues in California, Oregon and Washington.

Remember, this has not been finalized or confirmed, and could of course change.  Still, nice rumor.

Thanks to the fan who passed along that information to me!

Here’s Willie and Bob, at Willie’s 2005 picnic in Fort Worth, singing, ‘You Win Again.’

Tourists crowding the sidewalk on West 48th Street have been noticing the pungent aroma of marijuana wafting out of a tour bus that’s been parked outside Manny’s Music for the past four days. But only the smarter pedestrians figured out the vehicle with Florida license plates belongs to Willie Nelson. The unrepentant hippie is recording an album of jazz standards in a studio above the store and evidently uses the bus for smoke breaks.

Willie Nelson’s Leftovers

By ALAN PEPPARD / The Dallas Morning News

Wednesday morning, Dallas event planner Steve Kemble jumped into a hired car at the Four Seasons in Austin and found an empty Starbucks cup, muffin crumbs and a half-full bottle of water.

The driver apologized and explained he’d just dropped off Willie Nelson and didn’t have time to clean the car.

“The whole time he was apologizing, I was checking the ashtrays for something I might sell on eBay,” Steve says.

(Thanks to Budrock “Buddy” Prewitt, Lighting Engineer for Willie Nelson and Family for sending this.  Visit his site at www.Budrock.com, to see his great collection of posters, guitar pics and other memorabilia he has collected over the past 30 or so years working with Willie and the band.)

Willie Nelson sings for nuptials

Monday, October 27th, 2008

While many Dallasites were doing their usual weekend routines, a lucky few spent Thursday-Sunday at the Rosewood Crescent Court celebrating the marriage of a Highland Park High School graduate to a British celebrity.

Just how extravagant was this wedding? From what I’ve heard, there was a private Willie Nelson performance, exotic animals, hot air balloon rides, and lavish decorations. The couple even had a closed processional from the Crescent to the Arboretum on Saturday.

The cost is estimated is said to be between $4-$9 million. Not a bad way to start their “happily ever after.” Details to come…

Willie Nelson, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Gates and the Personal Computer

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

I wasn’t going to post this picture, because I thought it was putting Willie down, because Willie is computer literate, and he knows what a PC is.  Mickey Raphael told me my blog was so positive, and yeah I guess so.  Maybe I’m losing my sense of humor.  But I thought the article at http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlLA  reporting that Bill Gates is launching a mega advertising campaign to counter the very successful Mac “I’m a Mac,” “I’m a PC” ads was worth printing.  And I read that Bill Gates hired Willie to sing at his wedding, because his wife was such a fan, and paid him $1,000,000.   Well, she has good taste, and Bill was generous to his new bride.    So it makes sense he would hire Willie to be in his ads.

News has broke that pioneering funny man Jerry Seinfeld will be the spokesperson for Microsoft.

Top-notch ad guy Alex Bogusky is the brains behind the operation. The man responsible for making MINI Coopers cool when gas was still $2 a gallon. And perhaps the sole reason guys 18-22 think they have discerning taste by choosing Burger King.

Our insider says the whole campaign is focused on ‘everyday’ people using Windows in real situations. Some of the options the agency has been floating around have been a reporter on Humvee, an Obama/McCain speech writer, a DJ – a blues musician. There was a crew that traveled all over the world filming humanitarian workers.

Not to be out done by ‘real people’ there are tons of celebrities that the campaign may also feature. At the moment the names that have been put into the mix are Sarah Silverman, Willie Nelson, motorcycle rider Travis Pastrana, Matthew McConaughey and Ralph Nadar. Also in what seems like a direct answer to the Mac campaign – Rob Corddry and Stephen Colbert may also do a spot.  Most notable of the names is that of the late great Bernie Mac.

Yeah, it’s bigger than Seinfeld. It’s a $300 million campaign to convince people that the world’s largest software maker is also the coolest. As refugees of the Cola Wars in the 1980’s we think they could take that $300 million and just make Vista not meltdown every couple months. You know, ‘what’s the deal with my operating system needing a major downgrade to be functional?’

Willie, Miley,Billy, Dolly and Lilly

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

TV Guide reports a rumor that Willie Nelson may appear in a cameo in the Disney film, “Hannah Montana, the Movie,” set to begin filming next April.   Interesting rumor, but I think it could be true, because the magazine goes on to say that Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s dad, is looking forward to casting Willie.  (Well, who can blame him, really.  If I was making a movie, I’d try to cast Willie in it, too, wouldn’t you?)

The movie will be an adaptation of the hit series about a girl who lives a double life as an average teenage school girl and a famous pop singer at night.  Stars of the tv show will appear, including lead star Miley Cyrus, co-star Mitchel Musso, and on-screen and real-life dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.

Brooke Shields, who plays Miley’s mom Susan, and Heather Locklear, who plays Lilly’s mom Heather, are not yet confirmed.   Other celebrity rumored cameos: Dolly Parton, Dwayne “The Rock.”

Willie Nelson, at the Democratic National Convention

   1908 Democratic Convention, Denver, Colorado

Bill Husted, of the Denver Post political blog www.politicswest.com has posted that Willie will play at the Democratic National Convention, opening the event on August 25, 2008, at Invesco Field.  I just hope it’s tacked on with a concert at Red Rocks, in Morrison.  We Colorado fans so look forward to seeing Willie at Red Rocks.  He didn’t play here last year; he was touring with Ray Price and Merle Haggard, promoting the Last of the Breed album.

A Juicy Red Rocks Rumor

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

(Willie Nelson, Red Rocks 2006)

I got an e-mail today from someone who knows someone who knows someone, and he said that next year Willie was going to play two shows at Red Rocks.

Wow, even if it’s just a rumor, it made me smile to read that.  He has played there two nights together in the past.  It would be wonderful, two nights of Willie Nelson and Family in the mountains.  Willie has played at Red Rocks more than any other artist (25+ shows).  The Grateful Dead are next, but they can’t break Willie’s record because, well, because they don’t exist.  The remaining band members all play there, but it doesn’t count, without Jerry. Willie didn’t play Red Rocks this year; he was back east touring with the Last of the Breed tour.  But Willie needs to defend his record.  I don’t know who’s next in line; maybe Blues Traveller?  Those guys play there every year on July 4th.

One show or two, I don’t care, just hope we get to see him there next summer!  Take it from me, if Willie announces a show there, you should plan on going.  It’s magic.  His shows are always magic, but there is something special about Red Rocks.

Willie Nelson and Wife Reconsmile
The Globe
April 25, 1988

Country star Willie Nelson and his beautiful blonde wife Connie are making sweet music again following a seven month breakup.  And they owe it all to their two teen age duaghters, who begged them to give their marriage another chance.

“Paula Carlene, who’s 18, and her sister Amy, who’s 15, plotted to get their mom and dad back together,” reveals a family friend.

“The girls saw Willie regularly during the separation and they took every chance they could to convince him to come home and keep the family together.”

The couple, married 20 years, split last summer when Connie, 41, told Willie she’d had enough of the hectic touring that keeps him on the road — and away from home — about  280 days a year.  She gave him an ultimatum:  “Stay home more with me and the girls, or we won’t be here when you do come back.”

Willie opted for his beloved music — and the road.  His family moved into a luxury Swiss-style chalet outside Denver, Colorado, while he spent what free time he had at his 44 acre ranch near Austin, Texas.

“But he found he missed Connie and the girls terribly,” says the friend.

“He realized that he really loves Connie and doesn’t want to lose her or the girls.  He’s vowed to do some major compromising in his career.

“Willie has agreed to be home more, and Connie will travel with him more than before.  She hopes her presence will remove some of the complications musicians face on the road.”

Sarah Gore, youngest daughter of Al and Tipper Gore, got married on Saturday to businessman, Billy Lee, in Beverly Hills.

According to a family friend, Willie Nelson performed at the reception where Al Gore was the life of the party.

Gore, who is currently a medical student at the University of California San Francisco, met Lee while at a function for her father’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Gore will be taking her husband’s last name, and will now go by the name Sarah Lee.
