In 2007, Willie Nelson & Family helped raise funds to build a new play ground for the students of the Peru Catholic School, in Peru, Illinois. Proceeds from the concert purchased new equipment for the school. The children made posters for Willie, and they were hanging all over the venue, and Buddy Prewitt, Willie Nelson’s lighting director, kindly photographed the posters and cards and sent them to me to share here. The concert was part of the ‘Concerts for a Cause’ series produced by Louise La Grotto restaurant in Peru.

This is one of the hundred or so cards given to Willie Nelson by the students at the Peru Catholic School.

Posters were hung everywhere.
Twenty-six years ago today, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young held the first Farm Aid concert in Illinois. And they’re still working to keep family farmers thriving so we can all have good food. Thanks Willie, John, Neil and Dave Matthews Band for your commitment to family farmers!
You can support family farmers, by supporting Farm Aid.
On 9/22/07 Willie Nelson and Family performed a benefit concert in Peru, Illinois, with profits going to help build a new playground for the Peru Catholic School. Children of the school created posters to thank Willie and the band, and they are featured here in this slide show.
The concert was sponsored by Lou’s La Grotto Restaurant in Peru, Illinois as part of their “Concerts for a Cause” series. Staff and students from 62 schools in the Illinois Valley wrote to Merry Noonan and her six-member committee that work on Lou’s La Grotto’s “Concerts For a Cause.” While all those schools needed help, one stood out. The letter written by Billy Samek of Peru Catholic School was chosen. Billy wrote a letter about the lack of a playground at his school.
“I like art and PE classes. I really like recess but all we do is walk around and kick a ball around on the blacktop,” he wrote. “We usually end up moving because we get in the way of the big kids. If we had a playground, we could share it with the big kids.”

After the concert, I forwarded a message from Willie Nelson to the students and teachers at Peru, Illinois Catholic School:
“Tell all the kids we had a great time and thanks for all the love from everyone there.” — Willie Nelson
Principal Steve Brockman wrote me back:
“I passed along Willie’s message over the intercom this morning. I heard loud cheering from all the classrooms.”

Always on our minds? Not always, but this legendary singer is very frequently, and definitely every time we think about beautiful, Texas-twangy ballads about love and the road and making it all work.
Willie Nelson, who celebrated his 75th last year, is quite an artist, lending his songwriting talents to other legendary singers, his acting chops to the movies, his wise political takes to the public discourse, and his love of the earth to his efforts toward finding cleaner fuel.
He’s playing at The Canyon Club on Thursday, January 22. In honor of having Mr. Nelson swing through Southern California, we wanted to thank him for…
1. Writing “Crazy” — yep, the “Crazy” made famous by Patsy Cline — which is a gorgeous, slow, painful song that makes everyone sad, but a happy-sad.
2. His support of “Bio-Willie” fuel for big trucks, a planet-nice way to gas up the tank. It’s made of vegetable oils, and Willie doesn’t mind going on TV to talk it up.
3. Setting his own trends with the braids and colorful headscarf he became famous for, especially back around the “Honeysuckle Rose” era. So Willie. So outlaw. Love it.
4. There’s a Ben & Jerry flavor named after him (Country Peach Cobbler). Okay, this is something that Ben & Jerry’s created, but still, if you’ve had a flavor named after you, you’ve reached a pinnacle in this world.
5. The LiveWillie.com wristbands, an up-to-the-moment, nice-to-the-fans way to hear Willie’s recent shows.
Thank you Willie. Strum on, good man…
