Tom Conway and Willie Nelson

Fans of Tom Conway and music-lovers everywhere will love Tom’s new album,  ‘Road Trip”.   The album, just released, is a collection of original Tom Conway tunes, and follows his successful ‘El Tigre’ album. I first heard about Tom when Willie Nelson was talking about Tom on the Bill Mack show one Wednesday, on Willie’s Place on Sirius/XM radio.  Willie was talking with Bill about his appreciation for the music of Django Reinhardt, the famous European gypsy-style guitarist born in  Belgium.  Willie told Bill that he had met another guitarist on Maui who played that style of guitar, and that he and Lukas had taken  guitar lessons from him, and that his name was Tom Conway.

Willie recorded the song, ‘Peaceful Solution’ with Tom and his band Gypsy Pacific, and the song appears on Tom’s ‘El Tigre’ album.  Tom said that he and Willie recorded many songs, and I hope that gets released, some day, and we get to hear that music.

“Hold on Tight” is the name of the new album, and also the title of a song on the album, and it’s also what you have to do when you listen to this album, because Tom and his band take you for a ride!  We get to enjoy his song writing skills and his stellar guitar playing.   It is a perfect rock and roll, summer-time, hanging out with friends, going on a road trip, make you feel good music.  It makes you feel good to listen to it, really.   Tom surrounds himself with such talented, music-loving musicians and his albums reflect the hard work they put into the project.  I love this album.

Tom Conway and Gypsy Pacific Concert in Maui (May 23, May 24, 2012)

Tom Conway and Gypsy Pacific will reunite for two concerts this week in Maui. It might be aleady sold out, but if you live in Maui, grab some tickets to this show if you can.

Willie Nelson recorded with the band in Maui a few years ago, and Tom later flew to Austin to record more songs.   That album hasn’t been released yet, but I look forward to it when it does!  The band performed a beautiful version of Peaceful Solution’, written by Willie and Amy Nelson, which is included in Tom Conway’s solo album.

The group formed in 2002 when guitarist Tom Conway joined by violinist Willy Wainwright and bassist Marcus Johnson, and were joined by rhythm guitarist Phil Benoit.  The band recorded two albums together, before going their separate creative ways.

“I have been a fan of Django Reinhardt since I first heard him & Stephane Grapelli with the Hot Club Band from France.  Tom Conway and his band play Django’s music right along side the other great Django bands – they can hold their own…and more!  I know Django would be proud that his music is so elegantly presented on the island of Maui and now for the rest of the world.”

Tom has been working hard on a new album, and I can’t wait for that.    To find out more information about Tom, his new album, hear other music, see more videos and find out when he plays in Maui:

Charley’s bar in Paia, Maui, not for sale

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Thanks to Tom Conway (www.TomConwayGuitar.com)  who sent me this picture of a giant Trigger which sits at Charley’s, in Maui.   Tom said it is almost 12 feet tall.

Rumors have been flying that Charley’s bar in Paia, Maui, commonly referred to as “Willie Nelson’s bar,” has been sold.

But General Manager Nancy Garcia says the rumors are false.

“There’s been interest in people buying it, but it’s not up for sale,” she said.

The bar, where Willie Nelson has played for years and is bedecked with his memorabilia, has been a mainstay on Maui’s North Shore, where owner Jim Fuller has operated it for four decades.

A cause of the rumors could be the back parking lot that, according to Garcia, is being renovated by a group of Greek billionaires.

“We’re basically a construction site,” Garcia said.

She said lack of access to the lot, which comprises a major portion of downtown parking, is hurting business for Charley’s and the surrounding restaurants and shops.

Lukas Nelson, Tom Conway, Don Lopez at Charley’s (9/19/2010)

The coconut wireless was in full force Sunday (9/19) afternoon when word hit the street that Lukas Nelson would be playing a surprise acoustic concert that evening at Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon in Paia.

Nelson, son of legendary Willie Nelson, spent much of his youth on Maui but in recent years, he has been living in California. His band, The Promise of the Real, maintains a relentless touring schedule that doesn’t allow Lukas a lot of time to spend on our tropical island. So when Rhythm & Views heard about the surprise show, it was time for a convergence in Paia.

I have seen Lukas perform several times but never in what essentially was a solo configuration. There was no electric guitar, no full-on rock band, no opening act, no headliner and no surprise appearances by his dad. Instead, there were three bar stools across the front of the stage, with Nelson sitting in the center. The drummer was tucked behind.

Dressed in black and wearing a black cowboy hat, the rocker looked like a country-music star. I always try to view Nelson as an individual — not Willie’s son — but it is hard not to notice the haunting similarity between the two, in looks and sound.

Yet Lukas is truly his own artist, both fronting The Promise of the Real and solo. He’s an exceptional guitar player, he sings with passion and it is clear that he belongs on stage.

Nelson, with Uncle Don Lopez and Tom Conway on either side, played classics, covers and original songs — with very little rehearsal we were told.

During one of the evening’s brightest moments, Nelson played a memorable version of “Little Wing.” As audience members broke out their smart phones to capture the performance, I wanted to jump up and shout out: “Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s death.” I managed to maintain.

Lukas followed the Hendrix classic with a kick-butt version of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” The two illustrious songs back-to-back moved the crowd to clap their hands and tap their feet while hooting and hollering in appreciation. When Nelson segued into Cash’s “I Walk The Line,” it brought the evening’s energy to a peak.

The audience was captivated; seriously, you could feel the positive vibe in the room. “Wow,” I overheard someone say more than once. “This is GREAT,” a friend texted from across the room. It was as if the small group of people gathered were being treated to a personal show — like we were special guests at someone’s home.

The following day, I asked Lukas if he could feel the same vibe. He did. “It was very intimate,” he said. “I have the utmost admiration for that place.”

Nelson told R&V that The Promise of the Real will return to Charley’s in December for a full-band concert.

For those who can’t wait, Nelson will take one more night out of his vacation to play a second impromptu gig at Charley’s, Wednesday night, Sept. 22. He’ll have his electric guitar, several local players and a full drum-kit on stage. If Sunday was a little bit country, Wednesday will be a lot of rock’n’roll. Essentially, however, it will be Lukas “solo” doing his thing at his favorite saloon during a quick trip home.

Nelson said Wednesday’s show will feature several special guests including Donnie Smith, Don Lopez, Tom Conway, Marty Dread, Mark Johnstone and Josh Greenbaum, among others. The music starts at 9 p.m.

Don’t miss it.

Tom Conway and Willie Nelson

Thanks to Tom and Sandra Conway for sharing pictures from the Neil Abercrombie fundraiser and concert on Wedneday, August 24, 2010. Tom was invited to play with Willie Nelson at the concert, and sent these photos and stories:

“Well the event was a smash success! Of course the highlight for me was getting to play with Willie again. I worked really hard immersing myself in his standard repertoire the last couple of weeks…everyday practicing and memorizing as many of his tunes that I could in order to be prepared. I’m glad I did – I think the band sounded really good and I certainly want to give him my best.  I know so many of his tunes now that I hope I can play with him again at some point!

Everyone at the event was so friendly and the atmosphere was highly charged in a great way. We got to spend some quality time with Willie and he was in great form as usual. He flew back home after the gig but we stayed overnight and went out to celebrate with Neil supporters Bob & Kelly King who own Pacific Biodiesel on Maui. It was just a fantastic time that Sandra & I will never forget…the full moon over Diamond Head late that night didn’t hurt the ambience either as Sandy & I sat out on the balcony.”

Willie Nelson and Tom Conway, Honolulu (8/24/2010)

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Willie Nelson asked Musician Tom Conway to play with him at the fundraiser concert for gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie last Tuesday, August 24th.  Tom invited musicians Marcus Johnson, on bass, and Paul Marchetti, on drums.  (The harp player just invited himself on stage for the song.  His mic’s not on, though.)

Tom’s wife Sandra took this video of Willie and Tom performing, ‘On the Road Again.’     Tom learned the harmony lead part that Willie used to do with Jody Payne on this song, and when Willie hears him play it,  Willie turns towards Tom and plays it with him.  It’s so fun.  Tom works so hard to prepare to play with Willie when he invites him.  Thank you Sandra and Tom.

Tom Conway has a website at www.TomConwayguitar.com, and you can hear music from his new album — and buy a copy directly from the site.  Willie Nelson performs on Tom’s album, on the song written by Willie and daughter Amy Nelson, ‘A Peaceful Solution.’
