Fans Line up to buy Willie Nelson and Last of Breed Show Tickets

At least one person waited 29 hours for a chance to see Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price.

May 21, 2007 — The sign outside the box office read “Last of the Breed. Willie, Merle, Ray on sale.” Nearby, people of all ages stood in line at the York Expo Center on Sunday to buy tickets to see Willie Nelson in September.As they waited, some recalled seeing the music great in the past. Others discussed their love of country music, and many talked of Nelson’s reputation as a pothead.

Here’s a sampling of the ticket-waiting crowd:  

“He only has to sing one song … ‘Always On My Mind’ and I’ll pass out.”

– West York resident Betty Lau, 82

“This will be the 24th time seeing Willie .. . The first time I saw him was in 1968 with ZZ Top in Austin, Texas. I paid 50 cents.”

– Sharon Smith, West York

“I don’t like his lifestyle. I like his music.”

– Dottie Roller, Newberry Township

“Word search books, eat, sleep.”

– Tina Fry, of what she did to pass the 29 hours she waited in line for tickets to go on sale. Fry was the first to buy tickets Sunday. She said she bought them for her mother, who is a Ray Price fan.
