On April 6, 1937, Merle Haggard was born in Bakersfield, California.
After imprisonment in San Quentin, he becomes one of country’s most poignant singer-songwriters, with his blue-collar observations and rich vocal style sending him into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994. — CMT
