Speaking during a fundraiser before a backdrop of luxury at Gleneagles Country Club, Plano’s toniest golf course, Friedman said he would seek to agitate a political status quo that he thinks has become stale.
“I’m not afraid to stir things up,” he said.
Among his top priorities: Ending toll roads in the state, reforming education and energy independence.
Today’s main attraction, besides Friedman, was country music star Willie Nelson, who took time to sign autographs and take snapshots with Friedman’s supporters.
“I think he has some good idea for the state and, so do, I think, a lot of the rest of us,” Nelson said. “And Kinky’s willing to listen to all the ideas and take the best ones and run with them. Texas needs to do some things.”
An estimated 75 to 100 people attended the event, with most paying $1,000 a plate to mingle with both Friedman and Nelson.
Friedman ran for governor unsuccessfully as an Independent in 2006.
Both then and now, Friedman has positioned himself as a self-described “man of the people.” As such, he admitted today’s fundraiser was not exactly his cup of tea.
“This is the last time I’ll darken the inside of a country club,” he said, chewing on a cigar.
