It’s believed that Chris Tomlin may be the most sung songwriter in the world.

Outside the world of Contemporary Christian Music, the 33-year-old Texan is largely unknown. But within Christian music circles, he is a major force.

Praise music – music specifically celebrating the Lord – has been a booming facet of contemporary church music, and Tomlin’s songs like “Holy Is the Lord,” “How Great Is Our God” and “Indescribable” are among the most sung songs in modern church services.

He is also a rising star as a recording artist.

Last year, he took home Dove Awards for Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year. He also received two Grammy nominations for the 2007 awards.

Q. I read that Willie Nelson is one of your major influences. I’m not sure that would have occurred to me listening to “See the Morning.”

A. I love Willie. I grew up playing Willie Nelson. My dad loved Willie Nelson, loved old country guys and that’s how I learned to play music. I live in Austin now, where he lives. I’ve never met him but I love his music.
