Happy Birthday Gene Autry!

I saw Gene Autry when I was reall young, at a place in Nebraska.  My dad worked as an electrician for the producer, and he took me, and  I remember when Gene Autry came on stage with his horse, Champion.  I remember it was so cool that he toured with his horse and brought him on stage.

They celebrate his birthday in Texas every year, and this year they are celebrating what would be his 99th birthday at the 6th annual Gene Autry Festival and Gala on October 6, 7, 8, 2006, at South Fork Ranch, Parker, Texas.

Ray Price will highlight the entertainment on Friday night, at a $100 per person fundraiser/concert/dance/auction, along with Gary P. Nunn, and other comediens and entertainers.

There is great, unusual entertainment all three days, including David Hartwig and his wonder dog, “Skidboot”, Horse whisperer Jody Cunningham, Emil Luedecke and his prize-winning sheep dog, Ben.  Cowboys of Color, the largest mulitcultural rodeo tour in the country will present rodeo highlights featuring the Buffalo Soldiers, and Tmmy Brooks, a bulldoger.  Rattlesnake wrangler, John Hollister will be there, the San Antonio Charro team, and young girls wearing traditional costumes from the 1917 Mexican revolution will ride and perform military maneuvers which were used to divert gunfire from the soldiers during the war, and much, much more.

You can sign up and register to win this Martin DM Guitar, at a drawing to be held on October 8th at festival.  (You need not be present to win).  They say it will be autographed, but they don’t say by whom.

Gene Autry’s career spanned over 60 years and is currently the only person to have six stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.  In 2001 the Texas Legislature commemorated his life and achievements and recognized Gene Autry Day.  Proceeds from this year’s festival are to help buid a musieum to honor Mr. Autry.

You can learn more about the festival, get tickets and buy a ticket for the guitar drawing at their website at
