KUT Radio’s ‘Amazing Grace’: The Story of Willie Nelson

KUT’s award-winning Texas Music Matters series tells the little known story of Willie Nelson’s musical beginnings in Texas.

The documentary Amazing Grace: The Story of Willie Nelson includes interviews with some of Nelson’s closest friends, Turk Pipkin, Ray Price and a number of celebrities who’ve performed with Nelson – among them Norah Jones, Kris Kristofferson and John Mellencamp. There’s also the rare opportunity to hear demo sessions that Nelson recorded in Nashville.

And then there’s Willie Nelson, who tells his own story. This, alone, is worth the price of admission, as are the early demos.

David Brown wrote and narrated this doc, and he had helped from KUT’s Texas Music Matters unit and independent radio producer Michael May. This documentary debuted in 2008, but we found a good excuse to bring it back: it won two National Headliners Awards, including the Grand Prize for Radio.

On this next edition of Texas Music Matters: it’s the little-known story of a Texas boy born in the Depression, whose American odyssey would turn him into an international icon and one of his generation’s greatest songwriters. Join us for Texas Music Matters’ award-winning documentary “Amazing Grace: The Story of Willie Nelson”, as we honor the birthday of this legendary artist.
