“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” the record-setting American athlete said in a statement issued Sunday. “I’m 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me,” Phelps said. “For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public — it will not happen again.”
Oh, Michael, you deserve to get high once in a while. They guy has been working so hard all his life, competing, swimming for hours on end every day, and all the stress that competition has brought. He deserves a little relaxation. He’s won 16 gold medals (so far). This is just more proof that pot smoking doesn’t hamper success.
But I guess if I stood to lose millions of dollars in endorsements, I might make a public apology. And I’d watch out for folks at parties with cameras.
Craig Ferguson said on his late show:
“Now we know why he eats 12,000 calories a day” and
“Someone took that picture in a dorm room, and sold it to a newspaper. Michael Phelps needs to be careful. But then, if you can’t trust a stranger with a cell phone in a dorm room while you’re smoking a bong, who can you trust?”
