Robert Earl Keen’s Picnic
Q: You like to tell the tale that the burning car on the cover of your 1997 “Picnic” album is your car in flames at Willie Nelson’s 1974 Fourth of July picnic. True story?
Keen: I picked up this girl and decided to go to Willie’s picnic. I could play the guitar, but had no aspirations of being a professional musician at the time. That show had a great rock and country lineup that you would never see in those days – Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell, Dave Dudley – and it was really up my alley.
Well, my car burned up and I ended up without the girl or the car. I was literally crying, sitting in the dirt, and someone shook me off and said, “Look, I’m sorry about this, but would you like to meet Willie?” And I did.
