HILLSBORO — Country music pioneer Willie Nelson can add a hometown honor to his storied career.

The Hill County native was inducted into the Hillsboro Area Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Thursday night.  Nelson grew up in the nearby town of Abbott and still owns a home there. “I’m proud to be one of you,” Nelson told the crowd of about 650 fans and friends. Nelson was honored for his efforts to aid farmers nationwide and for helping to rebuild the Hill County Courthouse, which was damaged by a fire in 1993.  The National Forest Service also presented Willie with an award that night for his continued support through his successful public service announcements.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reported Nelson’s childhood friends remember the 72-year-old as a good kid who would play his guitar at a local barbershop and small local venues.  Hillsboro is about 60 miles south of Dallas
