Willie Nelson’s, ‘Hallelujah’

by Josh Hurst

Would you believe that I went to not just one, but four separate stores this morning, in search of the spectacular new Leonard Cohen live album, only to be disappointed? I’ve heard it already, obviously– thanks, NPR!– so I suppose I can stand to wait a few more days for a hard copy to arrive from Amazon.

In the meantime, what’s your favorite version of “Hallelujah,” the oft-covered song that stands as arguably Cohen’s greatest, most enduringly popular work?

I’ve recently come to believe that Willie Nelson’s version– he plays it as a somber, understated country waltz on his sorely underappreciated album Songbird– is the best version of the song that I’ve heard, at least recently.
