Farmers and all of us have achieved so much in the last 25 years. All across the country, family farmers are creating real wealth for local and regional economies and contributing to our overall national economic recovery. The number of farmers markets has doubled in the last ten years. Family farm food can now be found in your local restaurants, grocery stores and schools.
Yet, family farmers face challenges every day, from catastrophic weather to bad prices and corporate greed. Since all of us depend on family farmers for the food we eat, the challenges family farmers face are our challenges too. And it’s crucial we keep family farmers on the land.
Family farmers serve as stewards of our natural resources, caring for soil and water, growing sustainable green energy and working to alleviate climate change. And they’re producing the good food we all need to be healthy. In fact, we need a new crop of young farmers on the land. We need them to ensure that fresh, nutritious food is available to everyone.
Farmers can’t survive unless we stand up for them. They can’t grow our economy and our food unless we stand up with them.
We’ve come a long way from the farm crisis of the ’80s, but we’re not done yet. As long as family farmers are under threat, and as long as people need healthy food from family farms, our work continues.
