NPR Wichita celebrates Willie Nelson’s Birthday (April 29)

Night Train continues the April Siblings feature with some of the most prominent brothers in jazz. We’ll hear Robin Eubanks (with brothers Kevin and Duane), the Cannonball Adderley Sextet (with brother Nat), Elvin Jones (with Hank), the Dorsey Brothers (Tommy and Jimmy), the Heath Brothers (Percy, Jimmy and Albert), the Marsalis Family (father Ellis with sons Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo, and Jason), Art Farmer (with twin Addison), the Montgomery Brothers (Wes, Buddy, and Monk), and the Clayton Brothers IJeff and John). There’s also new music from Behn Gillece, Nelson Riveros, Raul Gutierrez, Lisa Hilton, and Ian Hendrickson-Smith.

Thursday, April 29

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the 88th birthday of Willie Nelson. We’ll hear the jazz side of his work in albums he did in tribute to Frank Sinatra, in a track he did with Dr. John, some instrumental Cole Porter, and a music and interview special with Nelson in hour two of the show. 

It’s also the birthday of Duke Ellington, and Latin jazz greats Dave Valentin and Ray Barretto. New releases tonight include the Brianna Thomas Band, the Le Coq All Stars, and the Uptown Jazz Tentet.
