Last Saturday, Willie Nelson was inducted into the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He received the honor during the Press Conference before the Farm Aid concert in Kansas City.   He is one of only 38 who have been inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame, along with John Deere,  George Washington Carver, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Dole, among others.  He is the first to be inducted into the Ag Hall of Fame since 2006.

Willie was presented the placque by farm broadcaster Ken Root.    Before his presentation, Root told about working as a reporter in the eighties, and reporting farm bankruptcies, and farmers’ suicides and even farmer homicides — things were so bad.  And then, in the middle of that darkness, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, along with an active energized board of directors and volunteers — organized the bright light that is Farm Aid.  And since that time, Willie Nelson has been as actively involved every year, for over twenty-six years.  And for all he has done and all he has inspired, they wanted to honor him in the Ag Hall of Fame.  Root told Willie, “You’ve made a lasting difference in farmers’ lives and the lives of all of us who have benefited from their labors,” Root said

“You’ve made a lasting difference in farmers’ lives and the lives of all of us who have benefited from their labors,” Root said.

After the applause quieted enough so that Willie could be heard, he shared the honor with his fellow Farm Aid organizers and board members Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews, who sat beside him on the stage at the press conference.  He looked at the three of them and said, “So thanks to all you folks, and I gladly accept this as long as I can share it with you good guys.”
