Not to tempt fate, but we don’t get much of a winter down here.
While friends and family members who inexplicably choose to live in the more wintry parts of our country shovel their driveways and install snow tires on their vehicles, we dine outdoors, bike around town and — if we accidentally dress too warmly — sweat like crazy at outdoor, holiday tree-lighting ceremonies.
With a few exceptions, if you want snow down here, you have to make it yourself.
And we can help. We’ve designed four Austin-themed paper snowflakes featuring guitars, bats, Willie Nelson and martinis (just pretend they’re prickly pear). Grab some paper and a pair of scissors, follow our simple instructions and let it snow!

Figure 1. Start with a square piece of thin paper. The thinner it is, the easier it will be to cut. I cut a 9-by-12 inch piece of 31-pound layout bond (purchased at Jerry’s Artarama, 6010 N. IH 35) to a 9-by-9-inch square.

Figure 4. Imagine the resulting triangle in thirds, as shown. For example, if your initial paper size was 9-by-9, the sections should each be 3 inches wide at the top.

Using a scissors or a small utility blade, cut out one of the four snowflake stencils, leaving just the black image (in our example, we used the guitar).
Figure 7. Place the cut stencil onto your folded triangle as shown, making sure the bottom point of the stencil lines up with the bottom point of your folded triangle. Trace along the edges of the stencil with a pencil to copy the outline of the image onto your folded triangle. Remove the stencil and set it aside. With the triangle still folded, take your scissors and cut away any area of it that wasn’t black on the stencil. When cutting is completed, gently unfold to reveal your Austin-themed, paper snowflake. To make the thin paper sturdier, place your snowflake between two sheets of wax paper, then place that between two sheets of printer paper. Carefully iron both sides. When cool, separate the pieces of wax paper and remove your snowflake.
