Willie Nelson has released great work in every decade since the 1960s, and his records are rarely difficult to write about (though writing well about them is another matter, of course). Albums from an artist of Nelson’s caliber will always contain something to adore, but Spirit, his ’90s high-point, is a special joy to listen to. The album’s 12 tracks (okay, 13 if you include the reprise of “Matador” that brings the record to a close), all penned by Nelson, are a master class in powerful, economical songwriting, while the arrangements, performances, and production are all brilliantly focused on drawing out every bit of the longing and heartbreak detailed in the spare and lovely lyrics. Truly one of Nelson’s finest moments, Spirit is essential listening for country and Americana fans, and for anyone who just likes a great song.
