PFC Austin Banks

Okay, I’m back.  The reason for my skimpy blogging this week is that I’ve been on a road trip to Fort Sills, Oklahoma, to watch my great-nephew Austin’graduate from basic combat training.  That’s Austin pictured above with brothers Dakota and John.  When Austin was 17 he said he wanted to join the military but I knew I had a year to explain all the reasons I didn’t want him to enlist.  I had decision making authority for him at the time, and there was no way I would ever sign off on that.   But, the day after he turned 18, he enlisted.  And I stopped my diatribe, and became an army mom, organizing the good bye barbeque, dropping him off at recruiters to go to basic combat training, writing letters ever day, and organizing a trip for family and friends to drive to Oklahoma to see Austin graduate this week.    The graduation and ceremony was a very moving experience, and I have deep gratitude and respect for those young who who step forwards to serve.  Thanks to them all.  No matter how I feel about war, etc..

And of course I took advantage of being so close to Texas, to go see Willie Nelson and Family in concert.  Willie was performing at Carl’s Corner on Tuesday, so I got everyone to leave a day early, and  I dropped everyone off at the hotel and drove  to Carl’s Corner with Rick, another fan who lives in Lawton, where Fort Sill is located.
