One of America’s most revered country music icon, widely considered a defining influence to country musicians playing over the past five decades, brings his incomparable voice and music to the stage at Beau Rivage on February 10, 2012.
At 78, country music legend Willie Nelson has recorded 67 albums, appeared in more than 30 films and TV shows and has written several books, both fiction and non-fiction. He has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and received Kennedy Center Honors, along with fame and critical success as an outlaw country man in ’70s and, later as part of the formidable Highwaymen in the ’80s.
At the age of 7, he had written his first song, and it wouldn’t be long before his success in music would lead him to sign with RCA Victor records. By the time he joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1965, Nelson had already written Crazy, the song Patsy Cline would turn into the biggest jukebox hit of all time.
But despite tese distinctions, Nelson’s most important critical acclaim was yet to come. When he turned to outlaw country in the early 1970s, Nelson released Shotgun Willie; Phases and Stages and Red Headed Stranger, the wildly successful album that featured Nelson’s first No. 1 hit as a singer, a cover of the 1945 song Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.
Nelson has performed with the greatest names in music and written and performed some of the era’s best-known songs. On the Road Again, Always on My Mind, Crazy. He’s performed with Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Jessi Colter, Tompass Glaser, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, Ray Charles. And so many more.
But even for the man who se the standard for daring new moves in music and who built a career on creating classics, time would bring more inventions to Nelson’s storied life.
Nelson, whose activist politics are as recognizable as his red, white and blue guitar strap and his distinct voice, has also worked to influence the economic viability of family farms and environmental sustainability. Besides the Country Music Hall of Fame, he has been inducted into the National Agricultural Hall of Fame for his work with Farm Aid and other fund-raisers to benefit family farmers.
He also helped start Willie Nelson Biodiesel, which manufacturers a biodiesel fuel (called BioWillie) made from soybean and other vegetable oils. The fuel is made for modern diesel engines in an effort to reduce the need for imported fuel and to use a product grown by U.S. farmers.
Nelson is celebrating the release of his new CD, Remember Me, Vol. I, a compilation of country’s most influential songs from over the pasat 70 years.

Willie Nelson was the 2019 honoree when the Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing held its annual Grammy Week celebration on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Recognizing the “artistic achievements and creative genius” of the Country Music Hall of Fame member, the event featured remarks from Kacey Musgraves, who praised Nelson’s unexpected role as a unifier. “He has this really unique ability to unite and really bring people together. It’s unlike any artist I can think of,” she said. “Underdogs, outliers, Republicans, rappers, presidents. Everyone loves Willie.”
The icon’s sons Micah Nelson and Lukas Nelson performed some of their father’s songs, including a moving rendition of “Living in the Promiseland,” the centerpiece track, written by David Lynn Jones, off Nelson’s 1986 album The Promiseland. Nelson himself joined in, along with special guest Dave Matthews, who earlier performed “Crazy” with Lukas Nelson. The evening ended with a customary sing-along of “On the Road Again.”
Along with Musgraves and Matthews, Ziggy Marley, Lisa Loeb, Feist, songwriter Diane Warren and “Weird Al” Yankovic were in attendance.
Nelson is the 11th artist to be recognized by the Producers & Engineers Wing. Past honorees include T Bone Burnett, Neil Young, Jack White, and Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz.
Nelson is nominated for two Grammys at Sunday’s awards: Best American Roots Performance for the song “Last Man Standing” and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for his Frank Sinatra homage My Way. Earlier this week, he announced a new hemp-infused coffee as part of his Willie’s Remedy wellness line.

The iconic Willie Nelson, whose career spans six decades, will bring his concert to the Sun City on Valentine’s Day.
The legendary singer, who turned 85 in April, is known not only for his raspy, unmistakable voice and remarkable song writing but also as a businessman, activist and author. His book, “It’s A Long Story: My Life,” landed him on the New York Times’ bestsellers list when it was published in 2015.
Here are five things to know about the singer with braided hair before you head out to the “Willie Nelson & Family” concert at the Abraham Chavez Theatre.
Daughter Paula Nelson is a singer and a host for Willie’s Roadhouse channel (named after her father) on Sirius. Daughter Amy and sons Micah and Lukas, often perform with their dad. Lukas has his own backing band, Promise of the Real.
In 2017, Lukas released an album, “Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real,” demonstrating he is coming into his own. He also has dabbled into acting, getting a small part in the 2018 film, “A Star is Born” and helped Bradley Cooper behind the scenes.
On the album, he mentions friends like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Ray Price and wonders why he is one of the last men still standing.
In September, he also released “My Way,” a collection of classics originally made famous by Frank Sinatra, a close friend and musical colleague. In an interview with Harvey Levin’s “OBJECTified,” Nelson said he often liked to listen to Sinatra to pick up on his phrasing, saying his was scary or not understood by some people.
What he likes to play: Most likely, Nelson will play songs from his new album as well as favorites like “On the Road Again.” But he also enjoys singing gospel songs, as he grew up going to a Methodist church and listening to hymns.
He also enjoys playing Sinatra classics, such as his flawless rendition of “My Way.”
Vote ‘Em Out: Nelson doesn’t shy away from taking a stand when needed. And in 2018, he had ties to El Paso with his support of State Rep. Beto O’Rourke. Much bigger than a concert, nearly 55,000 people crammed into the Auditorium Shores in Austin in September for the Turn Out For Texas rally.
O’Rourke joined Nelson to sing “On the Road Again,” and the crooner debuted a new song to mark the occasion, “Vote ‘Em Out.”
“If you don’t like who’s in there, vote ’em out,” he sang. “That’s what election day is all about, and the biggest gun we’ve got is called the ballot box. So if you don’t like who’s in there, vote ’em out.”
Cannabis: You can’t talk about Nelson without mentioning his affinity for cannabis. In fact, he said in an interview that he once ran back into a burning house to get a good stash of weed and his guitar, Trigger.
In 2015, he launched his own cannabis company, Willie’s Reserve, which sells marijuana, accessories and edibles in states where marijuana is legal.
And most recently, he launched Willie’s Remedy, a line that includes several items rich in cannaidiol (CBD), a derivative of hemp which won’t get the consumer high. CBD has been lauded for its health benefits.
The line debuted with a CBD-infused coffee, a Colombian whole-bean blend.

A ton of heavy hitters in music came together to kick off Grammy weekend and celebrate the great Dolly Parton as she was honored as MusiCares’ Person of the Year.
The event, hosted by Little Big Town, took place Friday at the Los Angeles Convention Center and included several performances of Parton’s iconic hits.
P!nk sang her heart out while recreating the country singer’s 1973 hit “Jolene” and Willie Nelson teamed up with Brandi Carlile for “Everything’s Beautiful (In Its Own Way),” a song he originally sung with Parton in 1983.
Other memorable performances included Trisha Underwood and husband Garth Brooks singing “Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle to You.”
Parton’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, also jumped onstage with Mark Ronson and Shawn Mendes for “Islands in the Stream,” and Katy Perry and country singer Kacey Muscraves delivered a sassy rendition of “Here You Come Again.”
Reese Witherspoon, Orlando Bloom, Rita Wilson and even political heavyweight Nancy Pelosi were also in attendance to support Parton on her memorable night.
The one-night event raised $6.7 million for the Recording Academy’s MusiCares program to assist musicians in need.

Lukas Nelson is a 2019 BAFTA Awards winner! Along with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, the singer-songwriter earned the Best Original Music trophy, for his work on the A Star Is Born soundtrack.
>Cooper was in London on Sunday (Feb. 10) for the 2019 BAFTA Awards ceremony and accepted the honor for himself and his collaborators. Nelson did not attend, nor did Gaga.
“We won a BAFTA! Congrats to my amazing friends @ladygaga and Bradley Cooper, and to my amazing band @promiseoftherealofficial for creating something truly special!!” writes Nelson on Instagram. “Thank you for the recognition @bafta.
Adds Gaga, who is in Los Angeles, Calif., for the 2019 Grammy Awards, “I can’t believe we just won Best Original Music @BAFTA’s … We made a film about music. This means the world to me. Thank u to all our fans we love u so much, we wouldn’t be here without u.”
Nelson served as a musical consultant for the 2018 film. The fourth remake of the 1937 movie A Star Is Born stars Cooper and Gaga, but Nelson is also one of a number of country- and Americana-leaning artists who wrote songs for the soundtrack. Nelson has writing credits on seven of the movie’s songs, and he produced seven of the songs as well. In the film, Nelson also plays a member of Jackson Maine (played by Cooper)’s band.
Nelson, Cooper and Gaga’s A Star Is Born soundtrack competed for Best Original Music at the 2019 BAFTA Awards against the soundtracks from BlacKKKlansman (Terence Blanchard), If Beale Street Could Talk (Nicholas Britell), Isle of Dogs (Alexandre Desplat) and Mary Poppins Returns (Marc Shaiman). A Star Is Born and its stars also earned nods in the Best Film, Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Sound categories.
