Willie Nelson’s Percussion Section

Willie Nelson and Family had a strong percussion section at the Fillmore Shows.  Lukas Nelson and his band the Promise of the Real performed each night before the Willie Nelson and Family Shows, and then Tato Melgar stayed on stage with his congos and percussion instruments.  Also, Willie’s son Micah Nelson joined Paul English and Billy English on drums, and they all traded off on different instruments.

Willie sang ‘Me and Paul’ three of the four nights of shows in San Francisco, and the crowd loved it every night.

Jodi Wrangham took this picture of Bobbie Nelson and Paul English leaving the Fillmore after Willie Nelson and Family’s final show last night.  For as long as I can remember, drummer Paul English has escorted Bobbie Nelson from the stage after a show.  And Jodi really captured their affection in this shot.

After the band’s sound check/ rehearsal, Willie kindly greeted fans and posed for pictures.  Here’s lucky Katrina with Willie, outside the Fillmore today.

Willie Nelson didn’t sing ‘Me and Paul’ last week at his show at Carl’s Corner. I think he was going to, Paul was at the drums, and Willie introduced him with, “And Paul English on the drums. I wrote a song about me and Paul”, and then he interrupted himself by telling us all that Paul and Mickey Raphael had both had birthdays recently, and he invited us to sing happy birthday along with him. And we all enthusiastically did.

Thanks to Janis for sharing this picture of Paul English escorting Bobbie Nelson off stage in Minnesota last night, just as he does after every show.    Mickey Raphael and stage manager John Selman are also in the picture, and Bee Spear’s left shoulder.

Willie Nelson and Paul English

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I haven’t talked to anyone who went to last night’s Willie Nelson & Family Show in Ireland, but I did talk to someone who talked to someone who talked to someone who was there.  No, it was a more direct source, than that, but the great news is Paul English on the drums, as usual.  So happy Paul is back on the road.

And come on you Irish fans, we’re dying to see your photos, please.
